Priest

The cleric is an example of a hybrid class, combining the abilities of fighter and priest. A cleric sacrifices hit points and many of the special abilities of a fighter in return for moderate White Magic spellcasting power.

I’ve always liked the cleric description from AD&D 2e, so am quoting it here:

The cleric class is similar to certain religious orders of knighthood of the Middle Ages: the Teutonic Knights, the Knights Templars, and Hospitalers. These orders combined military and religious training with a code of protection and service. Members were trained as knights and devoted themselves to the service of the church.

…(C)lerics, being reluctant to shed blood or spread violence, are allowed to use only blunt, bludgeoning weapons.

Player character clerics are assumed to be devoted to the Church of Law.
