This post intended for use with my Vancian Spellcasting rules variant for Dwarven Glory. See that post for more information.

The spell list for white magic is modified from the AD&D cleric list, split into one spell grade per class level. (Note that I’ve swiped some spells I like from later editions, and that white wizards only get the ‘good’ version of some reversible spells.)

If I get ambitious someday, I may link to spell descriptions.

Sometime I’d like to use my ‘minimalist’ ruleset in conjunction with old-school modules, but runecasting works differently than the Vancian magic in standard Gygaxian D&D.

Now, I could use the Spellcasters of the Unknown (an expansion to Searchers of the Unknown, upon which Dwarven Glory is based), but I have more fun making my own rules…

And as long as I’m tweaking rules, I may as well take care of a pet peeve of mine… I’ve broken the spell lists down so that each spell grade corresponds to class level. (4e did do something right.)

Also, I’ve never much cared for clerics as-written, so I’ve taken their spells and created a wizard sub-class. Magic-users who wield traditional ‘arcane’ spells are black wizards, while those who study ‘divine’ spells are white wizards. (Though I don’t make the distinction between arcane/divine in my rules.)

With that as a preamble, here are my take on minimalist Vancian wizards:
